📰 News: Meta unveils MusicGen, Innovative AI-driven Music Generator

Meta, Facebook's parent company, recently launched MusicGen, its AI-powered music generator. Similar to Google's MusicLM, MusicGen converts text descriptions into approximately 12-second audio clips, using existing songs as references or creating original sounds. However, unlike Google, Meta distinguishes itself by adopting an open approach, making this tool accessible to the public.

Meta disclosed that Musicgen was trained using a diverse dataset of 20,000 hours of music. Within this dataset were 10,000 licensed music tracks of high quality, along with 390,000 instrument-only tracks sourced from notable media libraries like Shutterstock and Pond5.

How exactly does it work?

MusicGen generates musical compositions by analyzing patterns, structures, and characteristics present in the dataset. It further learns the relationships between different musical elements, like rhythms, melodies, harmonies, and instrumentation, to produce fresh and original music.

In a comparative evaluation between MusicGen, Riffusion, Musai, and Google's MusicLM, Meta’s researchers found that MusicGen exhibited a slight advantage over MusicLM in terms of performance. MusicGen can be run on a GPU with at least 16GB of RAM and is available in four model sizes, from small (300 million parameters) to large (3.3 billion parameters), enabling the generation of complex and sophisticated music compositions.
