Microsoft, one of the world's largest software companies, faces a challenge with Gen Z and digital native companies showing decreased interest in their workplace productivity and collaboration tools. In an internal memo, CEO Satya Nadella highlighted the potential long-term risk this poses to their Modern Workplace business and emphasized the need for proactive action.
As a result, the tech giant plans to develop AI-infused productivity tools as a strategy to lure younger users from competing products. According to the memo, Nadella underscores that Gen Z users and digitally-native companies exhibit a preference for "user-friendly, agile, and collaboration-centric applications that leverage freemium business models and bottom-up adoption within organizations."
While Microsoft has acknowledged its efforts to bolster its offerings in those particular areas, including the acquisition of Chipclamp, a free video editing tool, and the introduction of Loop, a collaborative hub aimed at challenging Notion, a freemium productivity platform, the company acknowledges the necessity for additional efforts to engage younger consumers who show a preference for rival products like Google Workspace and to outperform competitors in creating next-generation productivity tools, as stated by Nadella.
Furthermore, Microsoft has openly acknowledged its determination to gain greater insights into Gen Z consumers, as evidenced by a study carried out by their research team on the preferences of office workers from the Gen Z and Millennial age groups.
